Certificate III Horticulture (RTF30103)

This course in general horticulture is suitable for people wanting to develop a broad range of skills and knowledge needed to work in the horticulture industry. It is also suitable for people who want to progress to higher level paraprofessional qualifications in horticulture. In conjunction with relevant practical experience, the course enables you to develop sound underpinning knowledge and a broad range of practical skills that will provide a good foundation for employment in the industry or for further study.
You can learn to determine basic properties of soils and growing media, sample soils and analyse results; recognise plants; propagate and establish plants; plant trees and shrubs; provide information on plants and their culture; plan and establish plant displays; pot-on plants; maintain nursery plants; develop plant nutrition programs and promote plant health; prepare, handle, apply, transport and store chemicals; treat and control weeds, plant pests, diseases and disorders; operate and maintain machinery and equipment; operate and maintain pressurised irrigation systems, or you may be able to select other elective units. You will also learn how to observe, maintain and monitor environmental work practices; follow and carry out occupational health and safety procedures; communicate effectively in the workplace; and work effectively in the industry.
This course meets the training requirements for a traineeship in Horticulture.

This course provides you with the skills and knowledge needed to work under supervision as a skilled operator or assistant to a tradesperson in the horticulture industry. You complete a range of general horticulture modules and may choose electives from a range of industry specific modules. This course is under review and may be replaced.

Certificate III in Horticulture (Landscape) (RTF30403)

This course is primarily for people who are employed as apprentice landscapers, or who are working, or want to work, in the landscape construction sector of the horticulture industry. In conjunction with relevant practical experience, the course enables you to develop sound underpinning knowledge and a broad range of practical skills required to construct and renovate garden landscapes, such as in private gardens, public parks and reserves, recreational facilities, housing estates and industrial complexes.
You will learn to set out sites for landscape work; lay paving; erect timber structures; construct concrete, brick and stone features and retaining walls; install irrigation and drainage systems; install water features; establish and provide information about plants; and establish turf. You will learn how to recognise plants, plant trees and shrubs, prune shrubs and small trees, and sample soils and analyse results. You will also learn how to observe, maintain and monitor environmental work practices; follow occupational health and safety procedures; coordinate worksite activities; communicate effectively in the workplace; and work effectively in the industry.

This course is for people entering, or wanting to enter, the landscape sector of the horticulture industry as an assistant to a tradesperson landscaper. It is also suitable for people who may be seeking employment as an apprentice landscaper or who may intend to progress to a trade level qualification in horticulture. In conjunction with relevant practical experience, the course enables you to develop sound underpinning knowledge and a broad range of practical skills required to assist in constructing and renovating garden landscapes, such as in private gardens, public parks and reserves, recreational facilities, housing estates and industrial complexes.
You will learn to recognise plants; plant trees and shrubs; prune shrubs and small trees; establish turf and renovate graded areas; install irrigation and drainage systems; install aggregate paths; lay paving; and construct retaining walls. It is also suitable for people who may be seeking employment as a nursery apprentice or who may intend to progress to trade level qualifications in horticulture. In conjunction with relevant practical experience, the course enables you to develop sound underpinning knowledge and a broad range of practical skills required to assist in propagating, maintaining and supplying a wide range of healthy nursery plants to customers such as retail nurseries, garden centres, horticulture enterprises, landscape contractors, government agencies and revegetation projects.

Certificate III Horticulture (Turf) (RTF30803)

This course is primarily for people who are employed as apprentice greenkeepers, or who want to be employed in the turf sector of the horticulture industry. In conjunction with relevant practical experience, the course enables you to develop sound underpinning knowledge and a broad range of practical skills required to establish and maintain greens, sporting surfaces and turf production. You will learn to establish turf, construct turf playing surfaces, prepare turf surfaces for sports, renovate sports turf, control weeds, prepare and apply pesticides, install irrigation and drainage systems, and operate and maintain machinery. You will learn about soils and plants, as well as observe environmental work practices, follow occupational health and safety procedures, respond to emergencies, communicate effectively in the workplace, and work effectively in the industry. The course meets the training requirements for apprenticeships in greenkeeping, bowling greenkeeping and golf greenkeeping.

Certificate II Horticulture (Arboriculture) (RTF20403)

This course is for people entering, or wanting to enter, the arboriculture sector of the horticulture industry and who work, or want to work, under supervision at an operator level or assistant to a tradesperson. It is also suitable for people who may intend to progress to a trade level qualification.
In conjunction with relevant practical experience, the course enables you to develop sound underpinning knowledge and a broad range of practical skills required to assist in cultivating, establishing, maintaining and caring for trees and shrubs in public and private gardens, public parks and reserves, bushland, recreational facilities, housing estates, institutions and industrial complexes. You will learn to recognise plants; plant trees and shrubs; transplant small trees; prune trees; climb trees and perform above ground pruning; operate and maintain chainsaws; fell small trees; remove stumps and determine the basic properties of soils and growing media. You will also learn how to observe environmental work practices; follow occupational health and safety procedures; communicate effectively in the workplace; and work effectively in the industry.

Diploma Horticulture (RTF50103)

This course is for people seeking the skills and knowledge to work independently, or at a supervisory or managerial level, or to operate a business in the amenity horticulture industry. It focuses on advanced technical, managerial and business skills as well as the underpinning knowledge required to apply these skills in the workplace. This course will enable you to gain a qualification in general horticulture while at the same time giving you the opportunity to undertake a range of specialist studies in different amenity horticulture industry sectors including parks and gardens, landscape, turf, floriculture, arboriculture, and retail and wholesale nursery. This course is particularly suited to skilled horticultural tradespeople who want to enhance their skills and knowledge for career advancement to managerial positions.
