What is Cabinet Making?

Cabinet Making comprises of the design, manufacture and installation of joinery items including kitchens, bathroom vanities, wardrobes and freestanding furniture.

In this career you’ll work with your hands and construct projects according to plans, specifications and individual customer requirements. You will use a range of construction techniques and materials including timber and manufactured board products, plastic laminates and flat-panel products.

Riverina Institute offers a Certificate III in Cabinet Making (MSF31113). Graduates of this course can apply for a Joinery contractor’s licence from NSW Fair Trading.

 

Who should study Cabinet Making?

On a broad level, cabinet making is for those who enjoy creating things and working with their hands. It’s for those who can follow written instructions and have a fine attention to detail.

This area of study is for those who want to learn joinery techniques and use modern machinery and tools including CNC (computer numerically controlled) machinery.

Cabinet makers, the term for those working in this field, also use computer software programs to design and draw projects, program CNC machinery and prepare cutting lists, quotes and material orders.
